Dirty Little Secret of SEO

From a post by a Search Engine Optimization blogger:

You see, very often people who buy a site analysis from me say they need to rank for keyword X, often a highly competitive keyword or keyphrase. They want to rank there because they’re not seeing the return from the rankings they already have that they were hoping for. They think the solution is to strive for keywords with more searches. In most cases, this is the wrong approach. The reason? They’re already getting visitors, but those visitors are bouncing away at first sight, or at least not taking the action they wanted them to take.

That’s from a guy who makes a living advising people on SEO and how to rank higher on Google and other search engines. All the little tweaks and adjustments you can make (i.e. putting proper tags, keywords, etc.) will help with minor boots in your ranking – but the best thing you can do is focus on making great content that will help people answer whatever question it is that brought them to Google and then to your site.

Content is King

It’s something we’ve been talking about for awhile in previous blog posts:

You Are Not the Focus of Your Website

It’s not all about you. It’s not all about you. (Say it with me now…)

You need to remember that the content on your website is not for you. It’s for your ideal customer (or potential ideal customer). That’s why we’ll push our clients to do a better job on the content of their website – because we are your customer’s advocate in building your website. It’s part of our job to argue on behalf of your customers for what they should be able to find on your website.

Selling Your Products Online (aka E-Commerce)

Like most things online, there’s a million and one ways to get things done. One area we’ve been working with a few different clients in is e-commerce/online shopping/selling your widgets or whatever else you want to call having the ability to sell your stuff online.

We’ve been working with a great Canadian company called Shopify to handle shopping sites for our clients. Shopify is based in Ottawa and is the classic internet application story where they built the site to scratch their own itch – their own online store is what they built first and then resold the services they had built from their experience.

We will be launching a couple of client store websites shortly, but we’d encourage you to check out Shopify’s brochure page or jump in and sign up for a Shopify account directly and get in touch with us if you’d like to work together on setting up your own online store.

Update:

One of our client stores just went live.

Pur Natural Home Fashions offers a variety of products from bamboo rayon towels to organic cotton bedspreads and comforter sets – all managed with their own Shopify store management system.
