Friday Biz Tip #6: How To Get Value From Boosting Facebook Posts

It’s that time again…#fridaybiztip time that is!

In order to help all the lovely Saskatoon businesses thrive online, we started the #fridaybiztip. Our goal is to give you guys an online tip every Friday (or at least most) for you to hum and haw over the weekend.

Let’s talk Facebook. I am sure everyone who has ever made a post on Facebook has noticed the little button that shows up below each post. Let’s talk about that little guy today.

FRIDAY BIZ TIP NO. 6: how to get value from boosting your Facebook posts

When used, this little button can result in an increased reach and engagement of your selected Facebook post. This means more views, shares, and potentially traffic and sales. First off, for anyone who does not know or has not noticed the little button we are focusing on today, let us introduce you!

There, now that we all know each other, we can begin. Because boosting comes at a price, of course, we get many questions from our clients regarding successful Facebook post boosting. Questions like:

  • When should I boost a post?
  • Why should I boost a post?
  • What post should I boost?

We have also had a lot of clients do Facebook boosting without asking us any questions. Unfortunately, when an inexperienced person does this, it can sometimes lead to wasted time and money.

Today we will answer these questions and tell you how to ensure you are always getting value when boosting your Facebook posts.

1. When should I boost a post?

Fact: “Facebook gives increased reach to posts that perform well with your audience. This means that the more people who like it, comment on it, share it, etc., the more visibility Facebook will give it in your fans’ newsfeeds.”

Sometimes businesses have the mindset that they should boost a post because they notice it isn’t getting much traction on its own. Let’s think of why this might be… likely because your audience finds it boring, irrelevant, or uninteresting. This is the worst type of boosting you can do! Just because you boost your post for $10 a day does not mean it will get any more interesting or engaging to your audience.

Thus the best strategy for when to boost a post is to:

Boost a post that is already performing well on your page

You already know that people like this post. There are lots of comments, or maybe a few shares. Your reach is pretty decent or maybe even a couple likes! These are the golden posts and the only ones you should spend money boosting.

2. Why Should I Boost a Post?

This one is easy. The only reason you should boost a post is to achieve a business objective. These should be posts with a clear CTA (call to action). Business objectives could be different for everyone, but may include things like:

  • promotion
  • event
  • driving traffic to your website
  • getting more likes to your Facebook page

Basically, boosting a post should always have some sort of call for some sort of action from your audience, or provide an advantage or more exposure to your business. Boosts are not for random kitten pictures.

3. What Post Should I Boost?

This is even easier.

We now know you should only be boosting posts that have been successful with your audience. How do you know what post to boost? Easy again! Facebook provides every business page with an Insights tab. Here you can find all sorts of data detailing your posts, engagement, reach and more!

Of course, you will want to boost posts that are somewhat timely (not something from years/months back). But the stats in here will give you a good idea of what post performed the best and let you know which would be the best to boost.

For anyone who is not a graphic designer by trade, matching colours with your marketing material may not be second nature. When creating materials for your website, social media profiles, posters, blog posts, etc. it is best practice to ensure your branding is consistent on all fronts. Colouring, logos, fonts, etc.

All of this may be easy for a designer to ensure, but what if you don’t have the time/money to spend on sending your marketing material to a designer every time you want to create something?

We have already shared an awesome tip on creating your own visual content without a graphic designer. Again, we can’t stress enough how valuable FREE tools like Canva are to small businesses. Especially in the visual and digital marketing age we are in today.

So you already have the tools to create awesome visuals, but how can you make sure your colours match? It doesn’t look professional to have lime green in your logo, but a font that is a shade or two darker. Having the exact colour code of your specific colours is so important to keep your visual identity and branding consistent and on point. Having several versions of promotional material could not only cause brand confusion for customers but just looks plain sloppy.

But how do I find colour codes YasTech?

Presenting one of the most awesome Google Chrome extensions ever… ColorZilla!

Simply install ColorZilla on your Google Chrome browser, and use their slick Color Picker to grab any colour code you can imagine.

Once installed, you will notice a funky little ‘dropper’ along the top of your browser. This handy dandy picker will allow you to select and find the colour code of anything you bring up on your webpage. Watch the screencast below to see how it works in action!

#FRIDAYBIZTIP NO.2 – How to Make Bangin Visuals Without a Graphic Designer…For FREE!

How many of you are about 10x more likely to pay attention or read a social media post that uses a visual (photo, memes, GIFs, etc.) vs. just text?

Oh, that’s right… basically everyone! It is human nature. I think most people on this planet are more engaged by visual content. Visuals can often paint a picture that words simply cannot. The exception to this is of course, a novel. Again majority of the population can attest that the movie is just never quite as good as the book. However, when your business is posting on social media, creating a presentation, or putting up a poster there is simply no place to begin writing a novel, nor is that what your customers want to see.

Thus, a major online sub-biz tip: the best way to engage your audience or teach your audience is through visuals.

Here are some stats so you know I am not making this stuff up (it really is quite important):

  • Visual content is more than 40x more likely to get shared on social media than other types of content (Source)
  • Content with relevant images gets 94% more views than content without relevant images (Source)
  • Facebook posts with images see 2.3x more engagement than those without images (Source)
  • Articles with an image once every 75-100 words got double the number of social shares than articles with fewer images (Source)
  • People following directions with text and illustrations do 323% better than people following directions without illustrations (Source)

Okay, so it is official. Visuals are an important part of sharing your business’ content.

But how are you supposed to create these cool visuals? You’re a small local business, you don’t have the resources to have a graphic designer, photographer, or media specialist on staff. Nor do you have the time to learn fancy photo-shoppy software to create engaging material.

There are many quality and FREE online tools that you can utilize to create amazing visual content. Today we will spill the beans on one of our favourites: Canva.

Canva is a free tool that allows you to create all sorts of media for your business. It has pre-defined sizes for many of the most common mediums (i.e. Facebook cover photo, profile pic, Facebook Ads, Twitter posts, blog posts, postcards, invitations, presentation deck, etc.) No worries about trying to format and get your sizing right, Canva takes care of that for you.

It also has several predefined layout options that look bangin. This takes out a lot of the guess work when it comes to design, as they have fonts and colours already matched up for you.

You can pretty much customize anything in Canva. You can upload your own pictures, logo, or branding elements and use them in a Canva illustration as well. Basically, the sky is the limit. It is truly an amazing tool for small businesses who may not have the means or experience to create amazing visual content. It is easy to use, FREE (unless you want to use upgrade images), and accessible to anyone! All you have to do is sign up for an account and away you go! Locked and loaded with an awesome visual creation tool for all of your business needs (print, social media, website, presentations, etc.).

Men’s Health Issues Don’t Stand a Chance!

In support of men’s health issues around the world, the boys at YasTech have decided to participate in Movember! Of course, growing mustaches alone, is kind of…well…boring. So naturally, we had to take it up a notch.

The three guys (now formally referred to as the Three Mustacheers) will be competing against each other to see who can get closest to their goal stache. Staches will be graded on the following attributes:

  1. Creativity of Chosen Goal Staches
  2. Stache Fill – is it a scary whispy teen stache? Or did that bad boy fill in?
  3. Grooming Effort – distinguished or disgusting?
  4. Donations – did we hit our team goal?

On a serious note, our fathers, partners, brothers and friends face a health crisis that isn’t being talked about. Men are dying too young. We can’t afford to stay silent.This is why we have started our own campaign with the Movember Foundation.

Last time we heard about Mike’s trip to the Rockies. This was definitely a scenic trip for our little YasTech mascots (Brooklyn & Ty), who were seeing the mountains for their first time!

Next up is… me (Megan)! I had a super awesome trip to the Shuswap. I caught up with tons of my family and friends and brought back some very exciting news to the office! Check out my trip below (not switching to third person though…that would just be weird).

What was the pit and peak of your trip?

Pit: Leaving! Even though the weather wasn’t the hottest, it is always hard to leave behind your friends and family.

Peak: Getting engaged to my best friend! Though the proposal itself was a little dicey (having to crawl up a slippery waterfall and carry a ring in his pocket while we swam out to it). He gets crafty points for thinking ahead and bringing a zip-lock sandwich bag to protect the merchandise.

What was the best thing you ate or drank on the trip?

Favourite meal:Peter’s Pasta! This is a little local jem in Kamloops. True to its name, Peter, who hails from Italy, truly makes the best pasta I have ever had. But almost as good as his pasta is the homemade salad dressing. You can literally look around the restaurant at any time and see people licking their plates clean. When salad makes you lick your plate… you know you are doing something right.
Favourite drink: Beer and OJ. How can you go wrong with that?

What was the one MUST DO thing you did on this trip (that you would recommend to others)? 

Definitely go check out Johnson Lake. It is so quiet and peaceful. There are no public beaches and very little development near by. The water is crystal clear and it is absolutely beautiful. A great place to relax and break away from the typical hustle and bustle lifestyle.

Did you check off any of your ‘bucket list’ items on your trip?

Yes! I am getting married!
Oh and also… had my champagne birthday! 26th on the 26th! That only happens once in a lifetime!

Who did you travel with or to see?

I traveled with my fiancé Cory (ha! that’s fun to say). We visited with tons of family and friends along the way. I even managed to catch my good friend’s wedding in Vernon.

How did you get there?

We flew from Saskatoon, but once we arrived in Kamloops we road tripped all over.

On our trip to Johnson Lake I got so excited to hang with my friend and sister that we may have forgotten about getting gas (apparently that is a necessary part of a successful road trip). Luckily we came across an old town in right in the nick of time to keep our road trip rockin.

Welcome back to our Summer Tour everybody! With this fun series we are following around our YasTech team on their summer vacations. Our team has some pretty amazing summer plans scoped out and we are excited to share some of the best pits, peaks, tips, and pics with you all!

Last week our lead designer Travis shared his epic trip to see his beloved Toronto Blue Jays. He also managed to sneak in a day trip to Niagara Falls with his girlfriend Lisa.

Next up, the our head honcho Mike heads off with his fam jam to explore the Rockies! This was an especially exciting trip as our little YasTech mascots (Brooklyn & Ty) had never seen the mountains before! Needless to say, I think they got their fill. Check out all the fun this fam got up to.

Pit: Thunderstorm in Drumheller that prevented us from going into large metal T-Rex. Apparently it’s not safe to go up into a large metal dinosaur while it is lightning outside?

Peak: Seeing 4 large grizzly bears in the wild in one day.

What was the best thing you ate or drank on the trip?

Favourite meal: Campfire casserole. Nothing beats cooking over a camp fire.
Favourite drink: COFFEE! ☕️ ?

What was the one MUST DO thing you did on this trip (that you would recommend to others)? 

Definitely go spend at least half a day at Moraine Lake. One of the most beautiful places on earth. You can hike and canoe while you’re there as well.

Did you check off any of your ‘bucket list’ items on your trip?

Mike – No.
Ty & Brooklyn – Yes, mountains!

We took our truck and camper and camped in three different parks. Other than a couple noisy kids in the back seat from time to time, the trip went quite smooth.

Facebook to Change News Feed – Business News to be Less Prominent

In honor of Social Media Day, here’s an article about Facebook.

Facebook News FeedThere was big news in the social media world this week, especially if you have a prominent business page on Facebook. On June 29, 2016 Facebook posted on their news feed that they are “Building a Better News Feed for You”.

Now what does this mean? Translation: Facebook is saying that friends and family come first, stating that

“… our priority is keeping you connected to the people, places and things you want to be connected to.”

So, if friends and family comes first, that means businesses are secondary.

*NOTE: If you read last week’s post about “Why every business needs a website” we said we’d be writing about the Importance of Quality in web design, but this news story was just too big to ignore.

It’s Happened Before, and it Will Happen Again

This isn’t the first time Facebook changed its algorithm to reduce business page posts in peoples feeds. Back in March 2014, Facebook took a big slash to page reach, which was deemed to be an effort to improve ad revenues. Shortly after in July, we released our own controversial post entitled, “Stop Posting Content on Facebook, Free Social Media Marketing Times are Over”.

In our blog post last week, we touched on a point that stated not to build your online presence solely within a Facebook page, and this is exactly why. Facebook can change their rules anytime they want. This is why it is important to build your brand and audience on your own website, and then simply supplement that traffic with social media.

Facebook serves a news feed to 1.65 billion people daily. That’s literally mind blowing. Of course this change isn’t going to please everyone, but I don’t envy Zuck in having to be responsible for trying to please that many people.

So How Do I Reach My Audience Using My Facebook Page?

If you are looking for more reach for your page posts, you can boost your posts or use Facebook ads. From our experience, by creating a well-designed ads and targeting the right audiences, Facebook advertising works. On most Ad campaigns we’re currently running for ourselves and our clients, the average cost per click is around $0.20. If you have a high converting landing page your driving traffic to, you can see a really great Return on Investment.
