Plenty of so-called SEO (Search Engine Optimization) experts will offer guarantees of a certain placement, typically #1, on a Google search for your web site. The problem with this is that it can’t be guaranteed. Don’t believe us? Hear it straight from Matt Cutts, head of Google’s webspam team:
A couple items of note from the support page mentioned in the video are:
- No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a “special relationship” with Google, or advertise a “priority submit” to Google.
- You should never have to link to an SEO. Avoid SEOs that talk about the power of “free-for-all” links, link popularity schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines. These are typically useless exercises that don’t affect your ranking in the results of the major search engines — at least, not in a way you would likely consider to be positive.
We have heard from clients that these are things being pushed on them by SEO “experts” in Saskatoon and beyond. You need to be careful how you spend your time and money online to promote your business. If you’re ever not sure, contact us and we’d be happy to give you advice on whether to proceed or not.
At YasTech we promote good SEO tactics that include having meaningful content, properly marked up content (i.e. the HTML behind the page makes sense to Google AND to humans), and a site layout/taxonomy that makes sense (i.e. having the Contact Us page actually at a /Contact_us/ url instead of /page2332.php)
